The NY Dance and Performance Awards, widely known as “The Bessies”, are New York City’s premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field in the last year.

After five years at the Apollo, the awards ceremony will once again be presented at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 pm. The awards were celebrated at BAM from 1985-1990.

Other than the three awards presented early on July 13 at the nominees’ announcement—including the Outstanding Revival Award, the Outstanding Emerging Choreographer Award and the Juried Bessie Award—all others will be revealed and handed out on October 18.

There are a total of 38 nominees this year split between six awards. Nominees include Gillian Murphy of American Ballet Theatre, Jamar Roberts of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, choreographer Camille A. Brown’s work and Heatscape by Justin Peck.
